Geönczeöl Pince

Southern Slovakia Wine Region

“I got into winemaking while I was still in college, back in the ’90s, and I made my first wine in 1997. A lot has happened since then. In 2006, I moved the wine press and barrels from the small cellar in Leléd to Garamkövesd, into a traditional wine press house built in 1882, and then I bought two dilapidated cellars next door. We currently farm 2.5 hectares, but the area grows a little each year, the cellars are being renovated, and the estate is thriving.”

The Geönczeöl Winery is one of the most important Hungarian-owned wineries along the Garam River, representing the Upper Hungary terroir with a traditional approach and thoughtful development. The winery’s owner, Attila Geönczeöl, has extensive international experience; he is a regular judge at Europe’s largest wine competitions and, as a wine writer, participates in numerous European and overseas professional events (Mundus Vini, Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, Grand Concours Strasbourg, Finger Lakes USA, Vinagora, etc.), and study tours; he is a member of the International Federation of Wine Journalists (FIJEV).
