The history of Villa Maria began in 1961, when Sir George Fistonich, just 21 years old at the time, planted the first grapevine near Auckland. What was then a one-hectare estate has since become one of New Zealand’s best-known and most award-winning wineries.
Villa Maria is a pioneer in several ways:
- it was the first to introduce screw-cap bottling for premium wines,
- it is committed to sustainable viticulture and organic winemaking,
- and its wines are currently exported to more than 50 countries worldwide.
Marlborough – The Home of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc
Villa Maria’s finest wines come from the Marlborough region, located on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island. This wine region is famous for its cool climate, which accentuates acidity and aromas; its proximity to the sea, which lends the wines a unique minerality; and the world-class quality of its Sauvignon Blanc. In addition, Villa Maria cultivates grapes in the Auckland and Hawke’s Bay regions, where it primarily bottles Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Pinot Gris.
Awards and Recognitions
Villa Maria wines have earned countless international accolades:
- International Wine Challenge,
- Decanter World Wine Awards,
- and winners of numerous domestic New Zealand wine competitions.
