Tokaj-Hegyalja is Hungary’s oldest and one of its most beautiful wine regions. The combination of the vineyards’ excellent location, the volcanic soil structure, the autumn sunshine, and the beneficial effects of the mist rising from the nearby Bodrog River is one of the secrets behind the quality and uniqueness of Tokaj wine.
Vine cultivation was already practiced on the wine region’s 5,500-hectare planted area even before the Hungarian conquest. The area was the world’s first designated wine region. A royal decree to this effect was issued in 1737, listing the 28 settlements within whose boundaries grapes suitable for the production of Tokaj wine could be grown. In 2002, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee inscribed the historic Tokaj wine region as a cultural landscape on the World Heritage List.
